A Happy Event

Last night, my good friend Melissa and I went to the State Cinema to enjoy the French movie – A Happy Event.

Here is a review from Margaret & David from At the Movies:

Fresh from the French Film Festival this year comes A HAPPY EVENT, which, as you might guess from the title, is about a birth. Barbara – LOUISE BOURGOIN – is a Ph. D. student who meets up with cute Nico – PIO MARMAI – who works in a video store. They fall in love, they do all the usual things – throw paint over one another etc, and then he suggests they have a baby together. From that point on Barbara’s body doesn’t really seem to be her own. And after the birth, things between the two begin to fray.

Adapted from an autobiographical novel by Eliette Abecassis, A HAPPY EVENT tells you all the things you most probably don’t want to know about bringing children into the world. Yes, your body becomes a harbourer of an alien being, yes, you have to give up alcohol while everyone else is being extremely merry, and yes, babies, despite bringing great joy, can put incredible pressure on a couple’s relationship.

It truly was a beautiful movie, and one that Melissa and I could both relate to, having had babies within a week of each other.  I connected easily with the characters, as they so beautifully articulated the amazing journey into parenthood!

Ps – I hope you all enjoy your weekend, and I promise I will post a photo of Poppy soon.  We haven’t taken many photos this week. xx
